Chateau Latour 1st Growth 2006, 0.75
The history of Château Latour dates back at least to the 14th century, although the vineyards for which it is now world-renowned were not fully established until the 17th century. The estate is located at the southern end of Pauillac, bordering the vineyards of the Saint-Julien appellation and Château Léoville Las Cases, and covers 78 hectares. After a period under English ownership by the famous Parsons Group, owners of the Financial Times and Harveys of Bristol, the property was sold to Allied Lyons in 1989 and then purchased in 1993 by French billionaire industrialist François Pinault, whose empire includes Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, and the auction house Christie's. He delegated daily control of the estate and its wines to his dynamic president, Frédéric Engerer, under whose leadership a major investment program has been implemented, leading Château Latour to rise to an undisputed premier position in the Bordeaux wine hierarchy. Château Latour was classified as a 1st Grand Cru Classé of the Médoc in 1855. As we would expect in the Pauillac appellation, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, accounting for 80% of the vineyard, with the remaining three being Merlot 18%, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.
Vinification is strictly controlled, with a rigorous selection of only the ripest grapes and separate tanks for each vineyard plot. Three weeks of maceration are followed by malolactic fermentation in vats, before the wine selected to become Château Latour is aged in 100% new oak barrels. The wine's style is powerful, structured, and captivating, and for many, it is the most consistent producer among the five top classified wines of the past century, earning an enviable reputation for producing exceptional wine even in more challenging vintages. It has great aging potential, with the best vintages lasting over a century.
