Château Lynch-Bages 5th Grand Cru Classé 2016, 0.75
Château Lynch-Bages has a long history in Bordeaux. It is named after the area where the castle is located in Bages. The château's vineyard was established and then expanded by the Dejean family, who sold it in 1728 to Pierre Durand. Château Lynch-Bages holds the status of a Fifth Growth Grand Cru Classé, according to the 1855 Classification of the Médoc, and is one of the most famous estates in the region. Since 1973, it has been owned by Jean-Michel Cazes and managed by his son, Jean-Charles. The Lynch-Bages vineyards are located on a plateau, west of the town of Pauillac, in the small village of Bages. Château Lynch-Bages owns 90 hectares of vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 75%, Merlot 15%, Cabernet Franc 10%) planted on deep gravelly soils with limestone.
Fermentation is temperature-controlled to ensure concentration and color depth. A special system of pipes transfers the wine from the vats to oak barrels (60% new), where it ages for 15 months. Château Lynch-Bages can be surprisingly soft and elegant when young. However, when fully aged, it develops a juicy richness and an incredible bouquet of mint, blackcurrant, and cigar box. As Oz Clarke (a famous British wine critic) says, "Lynch-Bages is impressive at five years, beautiful at ten years, and irresistible at twenty years."
