Description
Château Margaux was classified as a First Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Medoc classification and has been owned by the Mentzelopoulos family since 1978. Since then, it has produced some of the best and most awarded wines in the Medoc. As one of the greatest and most impressive châteaux in the appellation, Château Margaux in its current form was built in the early 19th century, although viticulture had been practiced on the estate for several centuries prior.
Château Margaux owns 82 hectares of vineyards, with Cabernet Sauvignon being the dominant variety (75%), followed by Merlot (20%), as well as a small percentage of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Approximately 30,000 cases of red wine are typically produced, with the first wine usually representing just over 40% of the total production. Margaux wines are known for their aromatic elegance, but this should not be interpreted to mean they are light, as the best expressions have enviable structure, complexity, and great longevity.
General Manager Paul Pontallier is rightly proud of his 2006. It features an aristocratic, fresh nose of blackcurrant with mocha and violet notes. The powerful palate shows dark chocolate, black fruit, hints of cedar, and a long, clean finish, and the texture, as always, is pure silk. Pontallier's opinion is that with the smallest amount of Merlot ever (4%) and only 36% of the harvest becoming Grand Vin, it is like a tighter version of the 1996. Make no mistake, this is not only one of the best wines of the vintage but also a fantastic wine in its own right.
