Chateau Margaux 1st Growth 2012, 0.75
Château Margaux is classified as a First Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 Médoc classification and has been owned by the Mentzelopoulos family since 1978. Since then, it has produced some of the best and most awarded wines in Médoc. As one of the greatest and most impressive châteaux in the appellation, Château Margaux in its current form was built in the early 19th century, although viticulture had been practiced on the estate for several centuries prior.
Château Margaux owns vineyards covering 82 hectares, with Cabernet Sauvignon as the dominant variety (75%), followed by Merlot (20%), as well as a small percentage of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Approximately 30,000 cases of red wine are typically produced, with the first wine usually accounting for just over 40% of the total production. Margaux wines are known for their aromatic elegance, but this should not be interpreted as them being light, because the best expressions have enviable structure, complexity, and great longevity.
The freshness of 2012 was the most remarkable aspect, supported by a lot of fruit. This is largely an archetypal Margaux with its gentle, spicy aromas that will develop and intrigue. If its price is right, and it should be, this will prove to be a classic and exceptionally pleasant Margaux from a vintage for which Paul Pontallier and his team deserve praise for creating such a success from a not-so-easy vintage. The terroir speaks, an incredible wine.
