Domaine Hubert Lignier has long been celebrated for exquisite wines known for their concentration, depth, and structure. We had the singular good fortune to begin our relationship as US importer for this estate with the 1978 vintage. At that time, Hubert Lignier bottled small quantities of two different cuvées of Morey St. Denis (the appellation bottling and the 1er Cru “Vieilles Vignes”) as well as the legendary Clos de la Roche. As our relationship advanced, more and more of the secrets of the cellar found their way into bottle rather than being sold to negociants. Now, all of the domaine’s wines are bottled under its own label. Hubert’s son, Laurent, is the next generation of this proud estate and follows the traditional practices of his father to assure that the treasures that come from the impressive family vineyards continue to show the best of their respective appellations.

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is a fine blend from the 62-acre Monts Luisants plot, planted between 1955 and 1965 on steep slopes, and the 28-acre Fremières plot, planted between 1953 and 1960. Just under one hectare of Pinot Noir grows here on complex soil composed of white limestone, clay, marl and compact rock. This smooth, spicy nectar ages for 18 to 20 months in oak barrels, 50% of which are new.

The bouquet of this Grand Cru is characterized by ripe red fruits and complex notes of lightly toasted truffle. Silky tannins suggest a fine, velvety body, sophistication colored with vivacity from the underlying mineral freshness. The finish has a delicate floral length.
