Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino DOP Sugarille 2013, 0.75
The romantic medieval town of Montalcino in Tuscany is surrounded by hills and dense forests. The soil, altitude, and varied terrain make Montalcino the ideal home for the Sangiovese grape and the region's renowned wine, Brunello di Montalcino. There are notable parallels between the Tuscan Sangiovese and the Piedmontese Nebbiolo: for over 150 years, these two indigenous grape varieties have produced some of Italy's most distinctive wines, known for their uniqueness, history, and prestige. The parish church, or "pieve," of Santa Restituta is located within the property and gives its name to the winery, where wine has been made since the 12th century. Pieve Santa Restituta produces three Brunello di Montalcino wines: Rennina, Sugerille, and Brunello di Montalcino.
According to records found at Pieve Santa Restituta, the land around the church has been dedicated to growing grapes for wine since the mid-16th century. The name Sugerille comes from the Latin suber (sughero in Italian), meaning cork oak, likely because cork trees were found there. This is the winery's top vineyard; the white stony soils (poor in nutrients and rich in calcareous clay), excellent drainage, southwest exposure, and ventilation coming from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, create the ideal conditions for a long-lived, structured expression of Sangiovese Grosso.
