Description

Our history dates back to 1840 when Don Felipe de la Mata, VIII Marquis de Vargas, decided to plant the first vineyards on the Hacienda Pradolagar estate. Marqués de Vargas began with a philosophy inspired by French chateaus, exclusively producing premium Reserva and Gran Reserva wines using grapes from their own vineyards right next to the winery.

Harvesting is done manually, parcel by parcel, with an initial selection made on-site in the vineyard. We pick the grapes in 12-kilogram boxes, which go into cold storage minutes after harvesting, where they remain until the next day. This overnight cooling of the bunches has been shown to have a beneficial effect on the final quality of the wine. The wines age under perfect conditions in selected French oak barrels from the best coopers. These are used to produce the premium Marqués de Vargas wines, which have received the prestigious "Viñedo Singular" designation from the Rioja Regulatory Council (DOCa) and the Ministry of Agriculture thanks to the exceptional characteristics of the vineyards. Applying only sustainable agricultural methods, we produce our Gran Reserva using grapes with the best aging potential, selected from the 52 hectares of our own vineyards, divided into 34 micro-parcels according to soil type, grape variety, and winemaking potential.

A wine officially designated as "Viñedo Singular," an expression of a unique terroir, the most exclusive in the Marqués de Vargas series. A wine with great longevity, our vino de guarda par excellence, internationally recognized as one of the 15 best Riojas. A limited and numbered series of estate wine, from which we release only the best vintages, using grapes from the oldest vines on the property, planted on average 50 years ago.

80% Tempranillo and 20% Mazuelo, the wine is aged for 23 months in new French oak barrels.

The aroma features notes from the wine's aging process, but with good fruit expression. Aromas of vanilla, tobacco, and pepper appear.

The taste is long and concentrated, with very good acidity.
