Description

Nikolaihof Wachau in Mautern boasts a history spanning approximately two thousand years. It once served as a Celtic cult site, part of a Roman fortress, a bishopric, and an administrative seat. The winery is the oldest in Austria. Riesling and Grüner Veltliner are primarily cultivated on 22 hectares according to the strict biodynamic guidelines of Demeter. The wines ferment on their own yeasts and are stored in large, old oak barrels in the historic Roman wine cellar for up to 20 years.

The winery's specialty is its "late releases," meaning wines that mature in wooden barrels for several years, in some cases up to 20 years, before being bottled.

The 2016 Riesling Federspiel matured in a 7000-liter wooden barrel for 6 years before being bottled in June 2022.

A wine that is just beginning to open up. On the nose, bright and delicate fruit, subtle aromas, with fine stone fruit and bright flowers, a fine salinity. Fresh, with a hint of apple, citrus fruits, and more floral notes, lingering on the palate with a delicate minerality.
