Chateau Giscours 3rd Cru Classe 2009 Magnum, 1.5
The first written records of Château Giscours date back to 1330. At that time, it was listed in historical registers as a fortified estate. The first mention of Giscours related to Bordeaux wine production is from 1552. It is one of the largest estates in Margaux and now produces wine worthy of its 3ème Cru Classé status. Located in the commune of Labarde, it boasts over 80 hectares of vineyards. Giscours was in a state of disrepair before being acquired by Nicolas Tari in 1952. He invested heavily, and the quality of the wine improved beyond recognition. In 1995, he sold the estate to Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma. Château Giscours wine is typically a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. The grapes ferment in temperature-controlled tanks, and the wine then ages in small oak barrels (30-40% new) for 18 months.
Garnet-purple in color, the 2009 Giscours opens with an expressive nose of cassis, blackberry, and redcurrant with hints of cedar, roses, and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied with a good core of muscular fruit and firm, grainy tannins, it finishes long.
