Description
The history of Château Lafite dates back to the 13th century, but its reputation as a grand wine estate emerged in the 17th century thanks to the Ségur family. From the 18th century, Marquis Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur sought to consolidate its initial successes and improve wine production techniques. At that time, he received the prestigious title "Wine of the King," and Lafite wine was even compared to the ambrosia of the gods of Olympus. On the eve of the French Revolution, Lafite was already at the top of the wine hierarchy. At the 1855 Paris World's Fair, Château Lafite was recognized as the first of the Premiers Crus.
In 1868, Château Lafite was acquired by Baron James de Rothschild, and in the same year, a barrel was noted to have been sold at a record price, which would remain unsurpassed for over a century. World War II had a strong impact, but thanks to Baron Elie de Rothschild and numerous renovation and reorganization projects, the Château regained its success. As for Baron Eric, he allowed Lafite to stand out by creating a circular cellar, building a new technical team, and associating the estate with famous photographers. The property is located at the northern end of Pauillac, separated from Saint-Estèphe by a marsh and the Jalle de Breuil stream. Two areas of the vineyard are particularly notable: the gravel plateau, which is the heart of the grand vin, and the Carruades plateau, from which the name of Lafite's second wine comes. The vineyard is planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), as well as Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (3%), and Petit Verdot (2%).
