Domaine de Chevalier Grand Cru Classé 2010, 0.75
Domaine de Chevalier is a highly regarded wine estate in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of the Graves region, south of the city of Bordeaux. In 1959, it was classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves for its red (a blend with a predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon) and white (a classic white Bordeaux blend) wines. The estate has approximately 60 hectares (148 acres) of vineyards on gravel and clay-rich soils, with most of them dedicated to red grape varieties. Although Cabernet Sauvignon makes up the majority of red plantings (63%), there is also Merlot (30%), as well as 2% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.
Domaine de Chevalier has a reputation for producing good wines even in average vintages. Maturation in barrels is up to 18 months with 35% new French oak. Domaine de Chevalier is notable for having retained its "domaine" title, which is more typical of Burgundy than Bordeaux. Chevalier comes from the Gascon word for knight, which is a tribute to a path on the property believed to have been used by knights in the 12th-14th centuries.
