Ch\u00e2teau L\u00e9oville Las Cases has one of the longest histories in the Medoc. Leoville Las Cases was the property of some of the most notable and wealthiest inhabitants in France. The final royal family to own the estate is where the chateau draws its name from, the Lascases family. But the history of what we know of as Ch\u00e2teau Leoville Las Cases does not begin there. We need to go back to 1638 when Jean de Moytie, a member of the Bordeaux Parliament owned a vineyard. It remained with the Lascases family until they became embroiled in financial difficulties, forcing them to sell shares to a number of prominent Bordeaux residents, including an astute German businessman by the name of Th\u00e9ophile Skawinksi. Skawinksi took a special interest in the property and became general manager. He passed his shares onto his heirs, the Delons, who gradually began to buy out the other shareholders and won majority control.
\nToday the Delon family also own two other properties, Potensac and Nenin, and L\u00e9oville Las-Cases is managed by Jean-Hubert Delon, who succeeded his father in 2000 and became the fifth generation member of the family to run the estate. The huge 98-hectare vineyard of Leoville Las Cases is planted to 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot 10% Cabernet Franc. As well there are a few remaining vines of Petit Verdot. Interestingly, this shows an increase in the Merlot plantings over the past several years. The Leoville Las Cases vineyard underwent major replanting during the 1950s after the legendary frost.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
