On February 4, 1862, the Bacardi family, led by Don Facundo Bacardi Maso, bought a distillery in Santiago de Cuba. What is unique about them is that they discarded the manuals and created their own unique blends, which laid the foundations for a real revolution in high-quality Cuban rums, which changed the production methodology forever.
The freedom fighter
Emilio Bacardi Moreau loved two things: his Roma and his country. He risked his life fighting for Cuba's independence, and despite his numerous arrests, imprisonment, and exile, he never gave up his ideal. His courage was rewarded on his return when he became the first freely elected mayor of Santiago de Cuba.
The bat
In Cuba, bats are considered a symbol of good luck. When Doña Amalia Bacardí spotted one of them at the distillery, she insisted that every bottle of family rum have a bat, making them a symbol of the brand.
The hosts of the party
In 1919, the sale of alcohol in the United States was banned. For this reason, the party moved to Cuba, where the Bacardi family became world famous for the parties, which were organized and lasted all weekend.
