Known since Roman times and widespread in the region for over 1000 years, Furmint is the oldest variety of the winery "Verus" and occupies 1/5 of all vineyards. The Slovenian name for the variety is 'sipon' and it originates from the time of the Illyrian provinces. Back then, Napoleon's soldiers exclaimed 'C'est si bon' (translated from French: 'It is so delicious') after drinking wine which the locals interpreted as 'sipon'.
The buds grow early but ripen late. Furmint is known for its long growing period, which is a prerequisite for excellent quality potential. The main challenge in growing it is to maintain a proper vine load by 'green picking'.
