Jamek
Wachau is one of the most culturally and historically fascinating in Austria. Among the unique terraced vineyards that have shaped the Wachau landscape for many centuries, the Yamek family is now in the 4th generation of viticulture.
The Jamek winery cultivates 25 hectares of the most highly valued vineyards in Wachau. On the terraces of the famous steep slope Ried Klaus flourishes Riesling with a cult status, with pronounced complexity and the highest aroma. The prehistoric rock terraces of the Achleiten and Liebenberg vineyards are known for their highest-class Gruner Veltliner, which is characteristic of the terroir on the steep slopes of the Wachau.
The Ried Hochrain and Zweikreuzgarten vineyards in Wösendorf are managed in cooperation with Melk Abbey, which has lasted for more than 40 years. Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay of the highest quality grow here.
In the Jamek wines you will find many varieties of the terroir typical of the Wachau region. Lightness, fertility and depth form a spectrum that makes the hearts of wine lovers beat faster.
The wines are classified in Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd. These are the Wachau quality standards and the protected trademarks of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus regional protection association.
The work in the wine cellar is carried out according to the latest trends in wine production, and the family always strives to achieve the highest quality. Josef Jamek began fermenting yeast in stainless steel tanks as early as 1976. After fermentation, the wines are traditionally aged in large wooden barrels. This gives the wines their elegant and harmonious character.
In 1998, work began on replacing the natural stone walls that had been damaged by storm, rain and snowfall over the past 500 years. Every spare minute from the melting of the snow to the first frost in November was spent on masonry. Traditional natural stone walls are built by hand and gain their stability only through the weight and friction between the stones, which is created by careful finishing work. This old craft is still an indispensable part of the training of the employees of the winery. Now the Achleiten vineyard is shining with new brilliance and the Yamek family is full of hope that the newly built walls will last at least another 500 years.
The ecological aspects, the sustainability and the preservation of the typical walls of the natural stone terraces of Wachau characterize the activities in the vineyard. The Wachau vineyards do not allow machine cultivation and for this reason all the activity in the vineyard is done entirely by hand.
