An Advertisement Wrapped in Whiskey
Advertising has always been an essential part of marketing and selling goods. The drive to make stand-out advertising that sells is also true in the alcohol industry, and in this article we'll showcase our most interesting and favourite ads in the whisky industry.
The first whiskey advertisements date back from the 18th century, when they were primarily made from texts, colorless drawings and low-quality pictures.
In the early 19th century, the first colour pages timidly appeared with visibility of the bottles and people depicting emotion and mood.
The first short clip ad is by Dewar’s and dates back to the distant 189, lasting 50 seconds. It caused a great wave of excitement. When I visited the distillery Dewar's Aberfeldy three years ago, the advertisement was projected at the entrance. It is inspiring even to this day. You can find it below:
The list of celebrities that have taken part in advertisements is vast. Some of them even own their brands. A few of the ads we love are: Sean Connery for Suntory, Dewar's and Jim BeamMichael Owen for Spey, David Beckham for Haig, George Clooney and Matthew McConnaughey for Wild Turkey, Connor McGregor for his own brand Proper 12 and Mila Kunis for Jim Beam. Prince Charles, on the other hand, is an ambassador for Laphroaig, a brand which uses his own flag.
The water of life has played an active part in the film industry. Many whiskey brands have taken advantage of product placement and have used it as an opportunity to use it in movies to gain more recognition.
Let's have a look at:
James Bong in Skyfall with The Macallan :
Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation" with Hibiki
The Day After Tomorrow and Balvenie 12 YO:
“Kingsman: The Golden Circle” и Old Forester:
Unfortunately, many laws limiting the placement of alcohol in movies have been imposed, resulting in almost zero showing of the whiskey. This, however, has a positive side, as many agencies become more and more creative.
