The Glenlivet 12
Glenlivet is a special place in Speyside. Translated from Celtic, the name means "valley of the smooth overflow." Those who named it that way probably meant the river Livet, which comes from above, from the so-called Pillar Hill, then meanders down and joins Avon. But something much more desirable came here - whiskey.
In the early 19th century, when exorbitant taxes led to illegal distillation, rocky peaks and steep gorges created the perfect cover for smugglers who wanted to hide from the authorities.
If you had a way to ask them, they would probably tell you it was worth the risk. The whiskey that was distilled here was unsurpassed. Glenlivet whiskey was even named after King George IV during one of his visits to Scotland in 1822. Most people were shocked that a monarch would ask for an illegal drink. But a local named George Smith was not among them. He saw in this an opportunity.
